A story of love, institutional indifference, and death in a Chicago jail.

Cassandra Greer-Lee did everything she could. Called 132 times for help.

It still wasn’t enough to save her husband Nickolas. And since his death, the number of people in the jail has increased to nearly pre-pandemic numbers. COVID-19 hasn’t stopped the cruelty.

Every Sunday at Cook County Jail.

In January, the Illinois legislature made history by passing the Pretrial Fairness Act, legislation that will end money bond and transform the pretrial legal system. Thank your legislators for supporting the bill or tell them you're disappointed they were on the wrong side of history.

PART 01

MORNING DIDN’T COME

”I began to become more and more worried. I left my name and number in hope that someone would contact me so I could get my husband moved off the tier and get other gentleman some help. That never happened.”

PART 02

NO AVAIL

“My husband should have still been here. He was 42. A healthy man. He left in a body bag. And it was not his fault.”

PART 03

HONOR

“I am protesting daily. I don't want my husband to be remembered as Detainee Number 3. I want him to be remembered as Nickolas Lee that made a change.”

I NEED TO PUT LIGHT TO WHAT HAPPENED TO MY HUSBAND, SO IT WILL NOT HAPPEN TO ANOTHER FAMILY. ONCE YOU HEAR EVERYTHING THAT I WENT THROUGH TRYING TO SAVE HIS LIFE, YOU’RE GOING TO UNDERSTAND MY ANGER.
